Simple Wedding Cakes
Tips for simple wedding cakes to cut your cake budget and still impress your guests.
The Blue Cake Company
Any bride looking to save money on her wedding budget should think hard about the type of wedding cake to choose before committing to an extravagant design and a hefty price tag.
What kind of cake would YOU like to eat on your big day? If you love scrumptious carrot cake, for instance, but absolutely hate heavy fruit cake, then why go to the expense of ordering a traditional iced fruit cake which costs a fortune?
Will your guests actually want to eat cake after the reception meal? In which case, you may choose to eliminate the cake altogether and give your guests a small gift instead.
Or alternatively, do you want the cake to double as the wedding reception dessert? If so, you can cut costs on both by making your wedding cake as simple as a slice of gorgeous pecan pie, if that's your favorite!
Cheap Plain Cakes
If you're going to have a cake made, keep the design ultra simple to keep the cost down. The cake in the above picture, for instance, hardly has any decoration other than the colored bow and tiny iced piping on the bottom of each tier.
You don't need lots of tiers either; just go for one big tier unless you're having a very large wedding party.
Cheap plain cakes can be jazzed up with the addition of a few simple things - tie some ribbon in your wedding theme colors around the bottom or get one of those amusing fancy cake toppers as the key design feature.
And if numbers are over 100 people, go for the really simple wedding cakes option - cupcakes! Beuatiful to look at when displayed in volume and super easy to make at home, if you're feeling brave!
Cupcake Wedding cakes
While I ordered my own cake as I hadn't even heard of using cupcakes for weddings when I got married, if I did it all again, I would save money by getting friends and family to make cupcake wedding cakes for me, all along a suitable theme of course.
I would personalize them with the initial of each wedding guest and keep the style super simple, like the gorgeous cakes in the photo below.
